Chinese manufacturer BYD plans to launch its Yangwang luxury brand in Europe in 2024, with a first presentation of its massive U8 luxury SUV at the Geneva Motor Show at the end of February, the group announced on Thursday.

The Chinese champion of electric cars, which became world number one in electric cars ahead of the American Tesla in the fourth quarter of 2023, thanks to its sales in China, reinforces its offer in the European market, where its sales continue rising. his childhood and where he plans to open a factory.

A giant and very powerful SUV

BYD also plans to present its first plug-in hybrid car for the European market in Geneva, based on its Seal U electric SUV.

Its U8 SUV, which deploys nearly 1,200 horsepower and is positioned as a competitor to the largest Land Rover or Mercedes, combines an electric motor in each of its wheels with a gasoline engine that recharges its batteries, like what Nissan offers with its “E- Energy Technology.

The U8 has already caused a sensation on social media with its ability to float on water and its differential steering: it allows you to turn the left and right wheels in opposite directions and therefore perform a trick easily and evenly. A “Tank Turn” was also recently achieved by the new electric Mercedes G-Class during the CES in Las Vegas.

BYD will also showcase a new SUV under the Denza brand, its joint venture with Mercedes.

BYD has already marketed six 100% electric models since its launch in Europe, the Atto 3 SUV, a rival to the Tesla Model Y, the compact Dolphin, or its 7-seater Tang SUV.

The group, which sold around ten thousand cars in Europe in 2023, plans to open a car factory in Hungary within three years, where it already assembles electric buses.
