Driving license: European Parliament does not vote in favor of mandatory medical examination

This Wednesday, the European Parliament did not follow the proposal of French MP Karima Delli to carry out a mandatory medical examination every 15 years.

Ultimately, there will be no mandatory medical examination to maintain your driving license. This Wednesday, February 28, the European Parliament voted on the bill by French deputy Karima Delli (EELV), but the mandatory dimension of a periodic medical examination is no longer included in the approved text.

“The text has been emptied of any ambitious element in terms of road safety,” explains Karima Delli’s team. “It is the status quo. It is up to the Member States to decide whether or not they want a medical examination.”

Some States already require it, such as Italy or Portugal, but the others, therefore, will not be obliged to introduce it. At the end of the vote, the MEP was very disappointed.

“The Europe that protects and saves lives is not captured in this report, declared Karima Delli. Even if it were approved, I consider it not up to the challenges.”

This proposal, which would have meant the end of the lifetime license in France, sparked lively debates, particularly about its consequences for older drivers.
