Car insurance: what will change the end of the green card and the sticker

From April 1, there will no longer be green cards or stickers to stick under the windshield: in fact, law enforcement agencies can directly check whether a vehicle is properly insured from a computer file.

A big change is coming to windshields. Next April 1 will mark the disappearance of the green card and the sticker that will be repositioned each year as proof of insurance.

For checks, law enforcement agencies have had access to the Insured Vehicle File (FVA) since 2019 and will therefore no longer need the paper document provided by insurance companies.

No measures are foreseen on the part of the insured, reminds the Lesfurets comparator. “This file is updated by insurance companies not in real time, but in a short period of time: insurers have 72 hours to report a new subscription or any event related to the modification of a car insurance contract (modification or termination),” said a press release.

A new document to provide in case of insurance change

In the event of a change in insurance, you must still be able to present an “insured vehicle report”. Document provided by the insurer when contracting to anticipate this 3-day period to update the FVA with the risk of being considered an uninsured vehicle. It can be submitted digitally, on your smartphone, for example, or via paper receipt.

Insurance is still mandatory

Road Safety specifies that this purpose of the green card should not be interpreted as the end of the obligation to be insured. It is estimated that in France around 680,000 vehicles travel without insurance.

From March 12 you can consult the FVA from an official website to check if your vehicle is properly insured, using the registration number and form number found on the registration document. If the vehicle is not included in the file, the holder of the insurance contract must contact his or her insurer.

The FVA website allows you to check if your vehicle is registered correctly. If this is not the case, you will need to contact your insurer.

A safer and simpler system

This digitization of the insurance certificate “represents an important step forward to simplify the administrative life of road users and in the fight against document falsification,” summarizes Seguridad Vial.

A more secure system than before and that should also allow us to limit paper consumption: it is estimated that the printing and sending of green cards would represent close to 1,200 tons of CO2 per year. A microdrop, however, in France’s goal of reducing its carbon emissions by 140 million tons by 2030.
