Motorcyclists and the two-wheeled sector demand that they be taken more into account in European policies, within the framework of an appeal to those responsible published on Tuesday, before the European elections in June.
“Motorized two-wheeled vehicles represent an effective solution to the problem of traffic and CO2 emissions, in accordance with the European objectives” on the matter, say the ACEM (industry), the FEMA (users) and the FIM (motorcycles). sports).
These federations would like to be taken into account, like the automobile, in urban mobility plans, in the road network (paved roads, shoulders, parking lots, electric charging stations) and in support projects for industry and to employment. While many electric models are coming to market, manufacturers recommend that we also integrate the use of biofuels and future synthetic fuels for longer trips or the existing two-wheeler fleet.
Take vulnerability into account
“L category vehicles (two wheels, tricycles and light quadricycles) can fill the gap between ‘soft mobility’ and car use,” underlines Michele Colaninno, president of ACEM and CEO of Piaggio.
For this reason, they ask to have access to subsidies and tax advantages granted to other modes of transport, such as electric bicycles. The two-wheeled sector would also like to receive more help in its energy transition, in terms of research and employee training.
The sector represents 389,000 employees in Europe, with a turnover of more than 21 billion euros. According to these federations, the production of two-wheeled vehicles should also be further standardized, in particular to simplify the rapid change of batteries in electric two-wheeled vehicles.
Two-wheeled vehicle drivers would also like to receive better training and for their vulnerability to be more taken into account in road safety training for other road users.
