MEPs and EU member states reached an agreement Thursday night on European legislation that provides for an end to the sale of new combustion engine vehicles by 2035, negotiators announced.
“We have just finalized negotiations on CO2 standards for cars. Historical decision of the EU for the climate that definitively confirms the objective of 100% zero emissions vehicles in 2035 with intermediate stages in 2025 and 2030”, tweeted the French MEP Pascal Canfin, president of the Environment Commission of the European Parliament. “We have an agreement,” a spokesman for the Czech Presidency of the EU Council also tweeted.
This proposal, announced by the EU executive in July 2021, will mean the de facto cessation of sales of gasoline and diesel vehicles in the EU from 2035. The measure must contribute to the achievement of the continent’s climate objectives , in particular carbon neutrality by 2050.
