Holiday departures: up to 940 kilometres of traffic jams at midday

Several access roads to the south were heavily congested, notably the A7, A9 and A10, while waiting times at the French Mont Blanc toll booth reached 1h30 in the late morning.

More than 940 kilometres of traffic jams were recorded by Bison Futé on the holiday route at midday on Saturday, for this fourth weekend of the summer when difficulties are being felt both in the direction of departures and in the direction of return. Bison Futé has predicted “very difficult traffic nationwide throughout the day” in the direction of departures. According to data provided by the meteorologist’s website, a peak was reached at around 12:10 p.m. with 942 kilometres of traffic jams accumulated. At around 12:45 p.m. the figure was 755 kilometres.

Several access roads to the south were heavily congested, notably the A7, A9 and A10. “There will be heavy traffic on the roads from Île-de-France to Brittany (N165), the southern regions and Spain (A10 and A63) and the Mediterranean (A6, A7 and A9 will also be very difficult to reach) Italy via the Mont-Blanc tunnel (N205) throughout the day,” the organisation said in its forecast bulletin. The website of the motorway company ATMB indicated a waiting time of 1h30 at the French toll booth for the Mont Blanc tunnel at 11h30. Traffic is also difficult in the return direction, and even “very difficult in the northern and western regions, as well as in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes”.

Sunday classified orange in the sense of departures

As for the weather, Météo-France put 15 departments in the centre-east and north-east on orange alert on Saturday for storms expected in the afternoon and evening. The meteorological alert affects Allier, Ardennes, Aube, Cher, Côte-d’Or, Loire, Haute-Loire, Marne, Haute-Marne, Meuse, Nièvre, Puy-de-Dôme, Rhône, Saône-et-Loire, as well as Yonne.

“If the announced event is confirmed, intense and very localised disruptions could cause difficult traffic conditions on the motorway,” Vinci Autoroutes said in a statement.

On Sunday, the routes connecting Île-de-France and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes will remain “heavily used throughout the day”, with the day being classified in orange for these regions in terms of departures, but in the rest of the territory, traffic should return to its usual pace.
