Mondial de l’Auto: for Luca De Meo, Renault is “a technological company”

Renault presents its Renault 4 in Paris, but also a concept car that heralds the car of tomorrow. For its CEO, the car manufacturer has now become a technology company.

At the Paris Motor Show, the Renault stand is unmissable. The diamond brand has brought together, on an area of 5,000 square meters, a town with its flagship brand, of course, but also Alpine and Mobilize, one of Renaulution’s great projects. The general director of the group does not hide his satisfaction at having achieved his objectives.

“It is the materialization of a vision that we built together a few years ago. I’m happy, but it’s not finished,” explains Luca de Meo.

The manager talks about the Emblème, a concept car that shares the spotlight at the stand with the Renault 4 and 5. “We use hydrogen combined with electricity, the car has a range of 1,000 kilometers from cradle to cradle. The circular economy.” The carbon impact has been reduced by 90%, says the manager.

“It was a challenge for the entire team. We must maintain this dynamic in which we project Renault into the future. We are a technology company.”

Concern about European regulations

Confident in his projects, Luca De Meo is less confident in the ban on the production of thermal cars in the EU from 2035.

“This type of regulation was made a long time ago on even older data, the conditions that would allow us to achieve this goal do not exist,” laments Luca de Meo.

According to the manager, “the electricity market is going at half the speed we should have” to achieve this objective. The European industry could thus be forced to pay more than 15 billion in fines.

“We seek to achieve the CAFE regulation” which aims to reduce the threshold of CO2 emissions from automobiles. But if the European industry is not successful, Luca De Meo renews his warnings.

“If electric cars are not sold, we can go buy credits from Tesla or the Chinese. We can also lower the prices of electric cars by breaking the business. We can also stop producing, according to our estimates, 2.5 million thermal cars. There are ten factories.
