Speeding, jumping red lights, not respecting safety distances, using the phone while driving… and soon the noise. Starting next year, the radars installed on French roads will also penalize the noise pollution emitted by certain cars.
Installed on top of poles, these new anti-noise radars can identify which car the noise pollution is coming from. If they detect more than 85 decibels, the penalty is a fine of 135 euros.
The system especially benefits some residents who live near especially noisy roads.
“There are people who don’t pay attention and accelerate from the bottom of the street to the top and the noise is infernal,” laments a resident of Villeneuve-le-Roi, in Val-de-Marne, who lives near a busy departmental road. .
Cars rarely exceed the noise limit of 85 decibels
Of the 15,000 vehicles that circulate on this road daily, only 15 exceeded the noise limit. Didier Gonzales, According to Didier Gonzales, mayor of Villeneuve-le-Roi, the sound signals detected by the radar are related “to the nature of the vehicle but also to its behavior.” In fact, a vehicle normally does not exceed 85 decibels.
In reality, the State mainly seeks to sanction the exhaust pipes marketed through this new system. But Jordan Gibert, a lawyer specializing in road law, fears abuses related to the accumulation of these control tools:
“The more we standardize this type of procedure, the more we will maximize the risk of technical errors in the radar or in the reality of the perpetrator.”
The anti-noise radar is capable of controlling vehicles even in heavy traffic. After having been tested in several French cities, it will be officially deployed in the territory in the coming months.
