How Renault wants to make Alpine an ATM

During its “capital market day” on November 8, the French group outlined a profitable and international future for the sports car brand relaunched in 2017.

The numbers make you dizzy, a bit like the A110’s 0-100 acceleration. At its Capital Market Day on Tuesday, Renault outlined a highly ambitious future financial performance for Alpine. By 2030, the sports brand -which has become one of Renault’s new business units- is aiming for a turnover of 8,000 million euros and a margin of more than 10% in 2030. A coup that Luca De Meo has already achieved with Cupra in Seat.

In America and China

To achieve these goals, Luca de Meo intends to expand the range of the sports brand. Starting with a single model currently – the new A110, a two-seater coupe – Alpine intends to launch a sporty compact and an SUV, before the arrival of the A110 replacement. These last three models will be 100% electric. Luca de Meo also highlighted the arrival of two segment models D and E -large cars- “for North America and China”.

Renault also intends to expand Alpine’s business reach. Distributed today mainly in Europe, the brand will conquer the first two automotive markets in the world, and especially the first two luxury ones, thanks in particular to its large models.

Become a world brand

From a Formula 1 brand and team seen as bottomless financial pits, Renault has been working for two years to build assets for the Group. Assets in terms of image first, especially in China.

“How many people watch a Grand Prix? 50 million?” Luca de Meo asked Alpine and team boss Laurent Rossi, who nodded.

“Renault is making the most of the Netflix effect: it is riding the Formula 1 craze to create a large-scale brand image and thus develop the brand,” explains an automotive specialist.

Beyond image, Luca de Meo relies on low-cost development, particularly through partnerships. The next electric stove? Alpine will be able to take out of Ampère, the factory is already being transformed. The replacement of the current A110?

“What makes sense is to develop future models with Lotus,” explains a financial analyst.

The English brand, owned by Geely – Renault’s partner in future thermal and hybrid engines – owns the sports car manufacturer specializing in lightness.

“The US market is big enough and customers are wealthy enough to find buyers for D or E segment models,” continues another expert.

And thus finance the development of the manufacturer.

Two billion euros of turnover in 2026

Thanks in particular to its agreements, Renault foresees a profitable Alpine manufacturer in 2026, with 2 billion euros in revenue. And four times more in 2030, therefore. Which also raises the question of a possible IPO in the medium term for the blue car manufacturer.

Several analysts see it as evidence to support this development. Luca De Meo did not close the door on Tuesday, alluding to Porsche’s recent IPO. But specifying that initially, Alpine’s growth would go through “the search for investment partners.”
