Two mountaineers, a Frenchman and a South Korean, died during a technically difficult expedition to Ama Dablam in Nepal, national tourism officials said on Monday, October 27.
French mountaineer Hugo Lucio Colonia Lázaro, 65, fell ill last week when he returned from successfully climbing this 6,812-meter peak.
“He was transported by helicopter to Kathmandu on Wednesday and died the next day,” Himal Gautam of Nepal’s tourism department told AFP.
South Korean climber Hong Khy Park, 66, died between camps 1 and 2 while trying to climb, according to the same source.
“Our department is consulting the concerned services to repatriate their bodies to their respective countries,” he said.
A mountain with steep walls
Ama Dablam, located in the Khumbu region of Nepal, is considered a beautiful but technically demanding mountain with steep walls. Nearly 400 climbers attended this summit this fall season.
Home to eight of the world’s 10 highest peaks, Nepal welcomes hundreds of climbers each year during the spring and fall climbing seasons.
Expeditions are a lucrative industry for the Himalayan country, particularly for climbing peaks over 8,000 metres. But setting out to conquer mountains of 6,000 and 7,000 meters is increasingly fashionable.
