New cars more and more expensive, it is not going to stop. This was said by the general director of Renault, Luca de Meo, the day after the presentation of the new organization of the group.
The weight of anti-pollution and safety regulations
“I think that cars are going to be more and more expensive, because between all the standards, the technology that the market demands (…) and the whole history of electric cars, the alignment (of price) is going to be done from the top. “, explains the manager, guest of good morning business this Wednesday, November 9.
“That is why we are not betting on an explosion of the European market in volume”, he continues, also referring to safety aspects, as well as connectivity and emission reduction.
Why Renault “started before the others”
Regarding the particular case of Renault, Luca de Meo admitted to having “started (to raise prices) before the others”, but to think the opposite of the strategy carried out before his arrival at the head of the French group.
“In the commercial management of Renault in the past, we had pushed in channels that were not profitable, there were many discounts and that had impacted the quality of Renault’s business. (…) We align ourselves with our competitors, but I don’t want to do more than that.”
While vehicle prices started to fall in the United States, a slowdown in auto inflation was also expected in Europe. Specifically, with an improvement on the semiconductor front, which mechanically made vehicles more expensive, with manufacturers favoring deliveries of top-of-the-range models.
In the longer term, the economies of scale generated by the production of electric cars and batteries in Europe should also help to lower the prices of these “zero emission” models.
