The technical inspection of two wheels will debut in 2024. A measure that affects the entire L category, with two- and three-wheeled scooters, motorcycles, mopeds of less than 50 cm3 or even cars without a permit (light and heavy quadricycles).
First controls in 2024
These vehicles are now also subject to the obligation to pass this technical inspection, just like passenger cars. But at a less frequent rate, five years after the first registration and then every three years. For a car, it is four years after its first registration and every two years thereafter.
During this first year of the start of the technical inspection of category L, only the oldest vehicles have been affected. The models prior to 2017 had been distributed to avoid too large an influx to the centers.
Those whose first registration date was between January 1 and April 15 (for all years prior to 2017) had until August 14 to do so. For a first registration date on or after April 16, the verification had to be carried out between August 15 and December 31, with a maximum period of 4 months: for a vehicle registered in 2015 and put into circulation on June 20 2015, the first inspection was to be carried out no later than October 20, 2024.
If the authorities show a certain tolerance, the lack of technical control is punishable by a fine of 135 euros.
The “2017 to 2019” expected in 2025
In 2025, it will therefore be the turn of vehicles whose first registrations were made between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019 to have an updated technical inspection.
You can easily find your entry year based on this first registration date in our module below.
In 2026, the recovery will continue with the 2020 to 2021 models. Then we will reach the normal pace in 2027, because it will be the turn of the first registrations in 2022, that is, five years later.
Second-hand resale is also affected
Important clarification: a technical inspection of less than 6 months will also be required in the case of selling a second-hand model that is more than 5 years old (unless you sell to a workshop or dealer).
Therefore, in 2024, only category L vehicles, whose first registration took place before 2020, were affected.
In 2025, it will logically be that vehicles before January 1, 2021 will also be presented in case of resale.
For example, if you sell a two-wheeled vehicle whose first registration appears in the registration document on September 10, 2020, you must present proof of technical inspection if you sell it on or after September 10, 2025.
