The R5 saves Renault’s electric bet

Zero-emission cars only represented 9% of the group’s sales in 2024. The arrival of the R5 at the end of the year gave the group some momentum in this segment.

A small voltage drop. A pioneer in the electric car sector, the Renault group experienced a slowdown in its sales in this segment last year. Zero-emission cars accounted for just 9% of the group’s total sales in 2024, when hybrids accounted for a quarter of sales.

However, a little yellow car has arrived to revive the electric one: the R5. 10,000 examples have already been sold and thanks to this, in the last quarter, electric vehicles represented 12% of Renault’s sales. “We had favored France, (…) and this immediately allowed us to make a difference, to be number 1 in sales of electric cars in France for individuals and utility vehicles,” Fabrice Cambolive, director of the Renault brand, told BFM Business this Thursday. The Renault 5 adds a new weapon for Renault to take this step towards electric.

Less than 25,000 euros

If the versions currently on sale are the most expensive, Renault will launch in the coming months an R5 that Fabrice Cambolive announces “for less than 25,000 euros.”

“All manufacturers, and in particular Renault, have come up with much more accessible offers in the two essential segments: C-segment vehicles (mid-size, ed.) for fleets and B-segment vehicles (small compact, ed.) such as the R5 and the R4. for individual customers,” continues the brand boss.

The group will thus launch “the Renault 4 at the end of spring in all European countries”, but also the Alpine A390 SUV which will also arrive this year.

“There will be an offer effect but this offer must be part of a framework that is clear to the consumer,” asks the manager.

Bonus level, information on sustainability, Fabrice Cambolive expects a more peaceful environment in 2025: “If we take the total sales of electric cars in Europe, this year, it is 15%, it is approximately the same level as last year, which This means that this is it, we have reached a stagnation between individuals, a kind of resistance and that we must now try to overcome.”
