In 2024, it is the most affordable new car that has sold the most in Europe: the Dacia Sandero. A consecration for the multipurpose city car of the low-cost brand of the Renault group, which is currently offered from 12,990 euros in France.
A model that also includes sales of its crossover version, the Sandero Stepway, from 16,150 euros, which represents a significant share of sales.
Dacia and Renault at the top
With more than 270,000 registrations in total, an increase of 14.3% in one year according to Dataforce data cited by Motor1, the Sandero thus dethrones the Tesla Model Y, the best-selling car in 2023 in the world, but also in Europe.
In second position we find another model from the Renault group, the Clio, with 261,569 units (+6.5%), that is, 20 small sales more than the Volkswagen Golf (+17.5%), in third position.
A gap that also leads to some caution: Motor1 specifies that the data collected by Dataforce takes into account “98% of all cars sold in December” in the European Union, the United Kingdom and the EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein , Norway, Switzerland). In other words, the Golf could once again be ahead of the Clio with the final figures of December 2024.
Tesla Model Y collapses
The Tesla Model Y fell to fourth place, with 210,484 units, but with sales that fell 17.5%, the largest drop among the top 10. Following its launch in China and Hong Kong, the redesigned version of Tesla’s best-selling SUV, codenamed Juniper, should be offered in the American brand’s catalog in the coming months in Europe. Enough to potentially raise the bar in 2025.
In the rest of the top 10 we find two other Volkswagen models, the T-Roc and the Tiguan, in fifth and seventh position, but also the Skoda Octavia (VW group), ninth.
Toyota, double the Yaris
Only one Stellantis model in this top 10, being the Peugeot 208, sixth with just under 200,000 units sold (+2.7%).
Also worth highlighting is the eighth position of the Toyota Yaris Cross, the most produced vehicle in France last year: 194,512 units (+10.1%). The Yaris urban vehicle finished in tenth place, with 180,806 sales (+13.8%).
