“Buying intentions of 10 points”: They arrive when electric cars (really) affordable?

While purchase intentions are low, a study analyzes the reason for this disenchantment between most French and the electric car. Automobile manufacturers are preparing the arrival of electric models at more affordable prices this year. A way also to meet the hardening of CO2 standards.

Would the electric car seduce the French less lately? Purchase intentions prove to be in a clear decrease, according to the latest barometer of the Rooletive Club Roole with Ipsos*. In fact, only 22% of the French plan to change electricity in the coming years. There were 32% two years before.

The purchase cost remains the main brake

Among the aforementioned brakes, we logically find the purchase cost: electric cars still too expensive for almost one in two French. And up to 57% in rural areas.

The other reasons mentioned also reflect the uncertainty that currently reigns around this engine and the choice of the European Union, all electric sales of new cars by 2035.

The lack of convictions with respect to the ecological gain of an electric vehicle compared to a thermal vehicle is indicated by 27% of the French. For 15%, it is the absence of technological deterioration and the lack of solutions to take care of at home.

6 out of 10 French have a bad electricity image

Result: “The vast majority of French have a bad image of the electric car (61% against 15% for thermal),” said Roole’s press release.

In 26% of the usual thermal customers, the transition to electricity releases apprehension and even stress for 14% of respondents.

Despite the devices such as social lease and the launch of more affordable models, almost 8 out of 10 respondents believe that electric cars are reserved for a rich population or for short trips.

Convert but well seduced

However, and as we have seen in the studies for many years, the electric car always seems to seduce those who have died there.

“A surprising contrast” with the bad image of these vehicles, underlines Roole.

We can also see an average mileage quite close between the two categories: 11,216 km for an electric car user, against 12,425 km for those in thermal. Confirming that the electric car is not intended only for small rollers and short trips.

Electric automobile drivers are also very seduced to a better performance, savings made from total to recharge and with a lower maintenance cost.

Although the bonus has been largely reduced and other AIDS are eliminated, the French are still 50% favorable for a strengthening of subsidies.

38% of respondents claim recent progress in the recharge infrastructure of this problem, but the decrease in recharge times is claimed by 38% of respondents, as well as a better availability and reliability of the load infrastructure, for 34%.

Finally, and while the ZFES harden (in paper) in 2025, 31% believe that this passage to electricity would only be motivated by the restriction of future regulations.

“The car is still essential for 8 out of 10 French people. The electric vehicle represents the mobility of tomorrow, but very little of our fellow citizens is equipped with it or can be allowed to adopt it as our survey stands out. These results strengthen our commitment to support support All motorists, especially the most fragile, in a transition serene to electrical mobility to benefit everyone, “said Jonathan Tuchbant, manager director of Roole.

These expected models in 2025

The context of the year 2025 remains a priori favorable to price reductions for new electric cars. And it is no longer a simple promise of manufacturers. The latter sees the hardening of CO2 standards and no longer has the option: they must generally increase their electrical car sales.

This is the topic we have chosen to address in our program. On the way to tomorrow January 25. Beyond the new products such as the new Renault 4, the Fiat Grande Panda or the New Tesla Model and, we also expect more affordable versions of models released last year, the R5 (expected less than 25,000 euros) and the Citroën ë-C3 , with a version equipped with a small battery.

*Survey methodology: IFOP survey for Roole, made with a sample of 1,002 people, representative of the French population of 18 years or more (according to the quota method). The interviews were conducted by a self -administered online questionnaire from December 11 to 12, 2024.
