“We double the price of the vehicle.” In his good concessionaire, Eric Benedetto makes his calculations. In a SUV Romeo Alfa, for example, the bill will become very salty this Saturday, March 1, with the hardening of the penalty of CO2 emissions.
“We are currently in a penalty that is already very high since we already have about 40,000 euros. As of March 1, it will fall to 70,000 euros, that is, the equivalent of the price of the vehicle,” explains the head of Sales of Mozart Auto Nice.
If the addition will be more salty for everyone who pays the fine, it will especially worry a greater number of motorists.
A fine that concerns more vehicles
The threshold to which the penalty will decrease will decrease. It goes from 118 grams of CO2 issued per minimum kilometer in 2024 to 113 grams of CO2 per kilometer from March 1, 2025. This means that from this level of issuance, these 113 grams, the owners will have to pay a fine of 50 euros to this first compensation.
For example, according to our Argus colleagues, Dacia Sandero, the favorite car, will almost surely be subject to penalty, while in 2024, almost 60% of the copies were subjected.
A sentence of greater quantities
The other evolution of this new penalty is that the amount paid with each gram of CO2 issued will also increase. This is, for example, the case of a Peugeot 208 gasoline of 75 horsepower sold new to 18,980 euros. It emits 120 g of CO2 per kilometers. In 2024 and until Friday, it meant a penalty of 100 euros. As of March 1, penalty increases to 210 euros or an increase of 110%.
And the figures rise quite fast, as in a small SUV. The Renault Capitur TCE 90 issues 134 grams of CO2: which is equivalent to 450 euros in penalties if ordered today. Tomorrow they will be 898 euros. The symbolic bar of 1,000 euros in sanctions arrives quite quickly, 136 grams of CO2 issued per kilometer.
And, therefore, the scale increases up to 70,000 euros, or 10,000 euros more than last year for the most issuing models, 193 grams of CO2 per kilometer. For the registration, in its establishment in 2008, the tax applied to vehicles that issue at least 161 grams of CO2 per kilometer and varied between 200 and 1,600 euros. Hence the criticism of having transformed the penalty into a tax disguised as new cars.

More electric or hybrid cars sold?
According to professionals in the sector, with this tightening, 66% of vehicles will be affected by the penalty. In 2024 it was more than half of the new vehicles (53%). What will consumers do? It is the graduate stranger, which worries professionals, while new car sales are not very good (-6.2% in January).
Some of the consumers can resort to hybrid cars, for which madness is important in recent months. But if they escape the prison often and allow him to consume less daily, they cost the more for the purchase.
Part of consumers could also turn to the occasion. This market increased by 8% in January.
