The German car giant Volkswagen said Wednesday that customs tariffs on cars imports in the United States decided by Donald Trump had partially led to a fall in operational gains in the first quarter. The largest European car manufacturer has said that its operational gain during the first three months of 2025 has fallen to 2.8 billion euros ($ 3.1 billion), compared to 4.6 billion euros for the same period last year.
This “considerably” result moves away from market expectations that provided an operational gain of around four billion euros, Volkswagen added in a press release. This fall is due to the non -recurring effects that totaled 1,100 million euros, the group said. These include 600 million euros in provisions linked to European Union emissions for car manufacturers and additional 200 million euros for the restructuring of the Volkswagen difficulty software unit.
More than one million vehicles sold in North America in 2024
In addition, Volkswagen was affected up to 300 million euros for adjustments of “provisions on the issue of diesel” and for a depreciation of the cost of “transit vehicles in relation to import rights introduced in the United States at the beginning of April”. Last month, Donald Trump announced 25% of customs tariffs in imported cars to the United States, as well as the tasks of additional reciprocal customs with several dozen countries, before returning on Wednesday in the latter, which indicates that he suspended part of the recharges imposed for three months.
Volkswagen -Group of 10 brands that also includes Audi, Porsche, Seat and Skoda- sold a little more than one million vehicles in North America last year, or 12% of their sales in volume. The decrease in the operational gain of Volkswagen intervenes despite the increase in group billing for the first quarter of 2025, which increased from 75.5 billion euros by 2024 to 78 billion euros, an increase of 3%.
The Wolfsburg -based group has maintained its prospects for 2025, but pointed out that “the announced increase in import rights, especially in the United States of America, is not yet included in the forecasts.”
