Electric cars: the gray card is no longer free

As of May 1, electric cars buyers will have to pay the gray card regulation, as for thermal. Only the Hauts-De-France region makes this advantage last.

It is a new advantage that disappears for electric cars buyers. Since Thursday, May 1, the latter must adjust its gray card, as for a thermal car. Since 2022, the fiscal horse was no longer taxed for electric cars, buyers only establish management rates (a fixed tax and transport rate), a sum of 13.76 euros.

Up to 60 euros per fiscal horse

It is a provision of the financial law of 2025 that now authorizes the regions, if they wish, to tax these “clean vehicles” (hydrogen models also worry) like any other vehicle. As is a regional tax, each region fixes its own price of the fiscal horse, according to the same scale as that of thermal cars.

For fiscal horses, motorists will have to be 53 euros in Nueva Aquitaine, 54.50 euros in Occitania, 59 euros in Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur or even 60 euros (the maximum authorized sum) in the Grand Est, the Val de Loire Center or in Normandia.

Therefore, in a new Renault 5, the administrative power is 5 tax horses. Therefore, it will be necessary to count almost 314 euros all taxes included if you register it in the Ardenas, in the Grand Est region. The sum will obviously be higher in a larger model, such as the Tesla Y.

An exception: Hauts-de-France

Note that regions can also choose to maintain tax exemption for electric cars. This is particularly the case of Hauts-de-France, an industrial cradle of the electric car with, among other things, the battery valley or the Renault factory in Douai, which is precisely the Renault 5. In its place, the region affirms “to promote innovation, support the energy transition and promote a competitive and responsible industry.”
