The European Parliament lightens the rules on CO2 emissions for car manufacturers

Parliament voted this May 8, the relaxation of the CO2 emission rules of the manufacturers, thus accessing a request from the sector for several months backed by the European Executive.

It will no longer be calculated per year, but for three years, enough to avoid strong fines since 2025. This Thursday, May 8, European agents validated a relaxation of the rules imposed on car manufacturers in CO2 emissions. With the change of legislature, the text was largely adopted: 458 votes and 101 votes against.

Specifically, instead of calculating the averages of the CO2 emissions of a manufacturer for a year, this calculation will pass more than three years. “The proposed modification offers manufacturers the possibility of fulfilling their obligations for the 2025, 2026 and 2027 when calculating the average performance during the three -year period, instead of each year,” said Parliament.

“This approach would allow them to compensate for any surplus of annual emissions by exceeding the objective established in the following years,” said the press release of Parliament.

The reduction objectives have also relaxed. Thus, “from 2025, an annual objective will be applied to reduce CO2 emissions by 15 % compared to the 2021 values for the period 2025-2029”, you can read in the press release of Parliament.

This vote follows the plan for the sector, presented by the commission on March 5. For several weeks, Ursula von der Leyen had made discussions with the representatives of the sector and certain representatives of the main producing countries to soften the rules of issuance of CO2 in a gloomy economic context.

The Clepa, the European Team Association, praised the vote of Parliament, seeing the possibility of manufacturers “of greater flexibility to achieve the” emissions “of 2025.
