2.5 billion euros FULE: less efficient radars in 2024 but intermittent cars at a record level

The road fines brought 2.5 billion euros to the state last year. A record level, despite the lowest income than expected for radars, but compensated by “SPFS sulfates”, these parking fines increased by 20%.

2.5 billion euros: This is what the road fines in France in 2024 reported, indicate an article in the last number of Auto Plus published this Friday, June 13, after consulting Bercy reports and the auditing court. A record level, with almost 500 million euros in additional income compared to the previous year. But radars are not everything.

How many radars are installed in France?
In total, at the end of 2024, there were 4,753 radars in the territory, a record level underlines the magazine, 92 more than in 2023. Among them, 252 Radars of Torreta, including 135 that monitors the speed and 117 grilled red lights.

Less “flickers” last year … after a service change provider

The number of “flashes” falls last year: 20.9 million of all the same (more than 57,000 per day), but 3.75 million less than in 2023. The French have been wisest? Not really, Auto Plus evokes particular acts of malicious in the context of an agricultural crisis, with radars covered with tires, for example, sometimes several weeks before receiving service.

More surprising: a change of the service provider responsible for the maintenance of the “autonomous” radars of SO, which weighed. These cabins that can be moved represent only 9% of the park, but a quarter of the flashes in 2023, recalls the magazine.

The radars that sometimes see vague: the conversion rate (which allows you to know how many flashes they really lead to a fine) was 73.6% for French plates and 69.9% for foreign plaques. According to Bercy, the number of unusable photos has degraded even more 3 points compared to 2023.

Very effective “fps”

Consequently, the radars would have informed “only” 658 million euros in 2024, 111 million less expected. Low performance compensated by several other road fines, such as FPS (posterior packages). With the formidable flicked cars that now move the streets of many cities in France, more than 16.3 million FPS were issued last year, 20% more than 2023, with a 2024 recipe estimated at 420 million euros.

Ultimately, it is the increase in fines of flat rates (AFM) that represent most of the main prize: 1,412 billion euros, or 217 million more than expected. The reports of Bercy and the Court of Auditors do not give any explanation, but Auto Plus assumes that this could be due to a jump of 30% of the flag fines (AFD), 465.00, +30% in one year. An alternative to legal procedures that can quickly reach quite high amounts: 750 euros, for example, for lack of insurance.

Of these 2 billion euros in estimated revenues of road fines (excluding FPS), around one third is used to pay the public debt, or 715 million euros in 2024.
