Tesla records remained sharply oriented in May in the European Union, without taking advantage of the marked increase in the electric car market, according to official figures presented this Wednesday, June 25.
The American manufacturer, who seems to have suffered in recent months since the position of his boss Elon Musk who married those of President Donald Trump, who advised until recently, sold 40.2% less private cars last month than in May 2024, according to the monthly state delivery of the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA).
During the first five months of the year, the withdrawal of Tesla records reached 45.2% compared to the same period last year, in an almost stable market (+1.6%). The manufacturer has only 1.1% of the European market, compared to 2% of the previous year.
Electric cars are progressing … but not enough
However, since January, 100% of electric cars records has increased by 26.1% for a year, reaching a market share of 15.4% in the EU. However, a figure “far from what it should be,” said Sigrid de Vries, general director of the ACEA, cited in a press release.
The EU plans to prohibit sales of thermal vehicles by 2035, but it has just softened the rules imposed on manufacturers in terms of CO2 emissions, to avoid fines this year.
The growth of the electric market “is always very progressive and unequal depending on the country,” said Sigrid de Vries.
In Germany, this sector inflated in 43.2%, but dismissed 7.1% in France, from January to May for more than a year.
While thermal cars (gasoline and diesel) no longer attract European buyers, falling from 48.5% of the market in January to May 2024 to 38.1% from the beginning of 2025, hybrids (including rechargeables) now totaling 43.3% of the records.
Volkswagen in mind, followed by Stellantis that still slows down
On the group side, Volkswagen (including Audi, Skoda, Seat and Porsche) still led to European records, with a 27.4% market share and records of 4.8% for a year since January.
The German giant has been followed by Stellantis, who has a 10% drop in the records since the beginning of the year and has a new boss with Antonio Filosa Italiano. The Franco-Caus-American Group (Peugeot, Fiat, Opel …) only has 16.5% of the European market (-1.7 points).
Third, Renault (with Dacia and Alpine), who will also change the leader after the announced item of Luca de Meo, is a market share of 11.3% in the first five months of the year, with records increased by 6.6% in one year.
