“Very worrying decrease”: new car sales break in France and Europe, Stellantis in free fall

France registered a 6.4% drop in the new records in the first half of 2025 after a European trend. In great suffering, Stellantis saw its sales fall by 16% in June when Renault resists.

The European new car market marked a clear decrease in June (-7.3% for a year) according to the figures published this Thursday, July 24 by the Acea manufacturers association.

Germany, France and Italy have strong particular decreases.

These main markets also reduce European sales during the first half (-1.9%).

Gasoline (-21.2%) and diesel models (-28.2%) have fallen greatly in the first half, replaced by hybrid models (+17.1%) that now represent more than one third of the market (34.8%).

Electricity progresses slowly

100% of electric cars also continue to grow, but at a more moderate rate (+22%) than in recent years, with a strong impulse in Germany as in Belgium thanks to tax advantages.

Electrics represent 15.6% of the European market.

“We are still far from mass adoption,” said Acea, which requires the review of CO2 issuance standards (which condition electricity sales). “Consumers are clearly cautious, and the strongest measures to encourage demand will continue to be a crucial element to accelerate the transition.”

“The remarkable decrease in new records is also very worrying for manufacturers, at a time when we face an increasingly unpredictable commercial environment and other threats to competitiveness,” Acea said in a press release.

Rechargeable hybrid cars (with a gasoline engine and a moderate battery that is connected to recharge it) experienced a slight rebound (+19.5%) thanks to advantageous taxes in certain countries and represent 8.4% of sales in the first semester.

Citroën of pain

The Stellantis Group, the European number 2 in difficulty, suffers most of the decrease in June (-16.1% or 30,000 sales less), especially in its Fiat and Citroën brands, in full renewal of its range.

The Volkswagen leader continues the fall in the market (-7.8%). The number 3 Renault resists (-0.5%) but has still reviewed its annual objectives due to difficulties in the public service market.

Toyota and Hyundai-Kia groups also show almost 10,000 less sales in June, and market quotas in the first half.
