Automatic radars capable of detecting other offenses that speeding or grilled red light? If road safety has been talking about this since 2016, it could be a reality next year, says Argus, which could consult the program to display new radars by 2026-2030. The Automated Control Department (DCA) launched a call for tenders for equipment purchases during this period, also with an important component in innovation.
Installed since 2017, the Tourelles radars, with a cabin perched on the top of a 4 -meter mast, must be able to detect fifteen crimes, which is far from the case today. In fact, these cabins only detect a limitation of overcoming speed or a red light crossing, “but not even simultaneously,” says the article in the specialized magazine. Even the option of lady, with certain empty cabins but without informing the motorists, has never been used.
Regulations to adapt
However, the use of photos or videos analysis through artificial intelligence would allow the theory to easily detect crimes such as the use of the phone while driving.
Today’s technologies a priori controlled, but would especially require an adaptation of regulations. The call to the tenders of new radars requires that manufacturers anticipate the necessary developments from a legal point of view. A way to limit the failures in which lawyers specialize in the road law as much as possible, could hurry to dispute these new fines.
In crimes such as the conductive telephone or the non -safety belt port, filming the cabin would require, for example, many administrative authorizations in the context of the protection of personal data.
Monitor safety distances, next step?
The DCT call for tenders does not explicitly evoke new crimes that can be punished through automatic control. However, Argus mentions the verification of security distances, or insertion. A function that discriminatory radars could easily work (cylindrical black cabins that cars can distinguish from trucks), but also urban radars, now equipped with Lidar 3D.
But it is not only enough to measure the distance between two vehicles: a video must make it possible to take into account the circumstances. Clearly, distinguish a vehicle that runs too close to it (which can be sanctioned for 135 euros fine and 3 points on the license) of the case where a vehicle makes a fish tail and, therefore, causes this crime.
By establishing this automatic distances control recently in Spain, motorists were really worried about being unfairly verbalized.
If the objective remains to reduce a frequent cause of accident, there are doubts in the ability of the system to properly evaluate the distances or verbalize without valid reason.
