Superethanol E85: consumption up to 85% in 2022

In a context of high fuel prices, sales of E85 superethanol have skyrocketed again since the beginning of the year. For a brand like Ford, directly compatible models represent 87% of sales.

Superethanol continues to seduce the French. While fuel prices have remained at relatively high levels this year, E85 (containing 60-85% bioethanol and the remainder 95 unleaded) has seen sales increase by 85% by volume compared to with last year.

The latest figures available stop at the end of October, but they already reflect the magnitude of the phenomenon, which is also reflected in a sharp increase in sales of directly compatible box models and installations.

87% of retail sales at Ford

During the first 11 months of the year, there were 31,500 registrations of so-called “original flex-E85” models, or 40% of the total fleet of 77,400 vehicles in France.

At Ford, among the few brands that market directly compatible vehicles, these E85 versions represent 87% of sales to individuals since the beginning of the year: with a rate that rises to 88.6% in the Focus and 94.2% in the Puma.

113,000 boxes installed since the beginning of the year

But the bulk of the E85-powered fleet is still primarily made up of gasoline models equipped with a conversion box, leading to a gray card modification. The French sector has identified 113,000 installations since the beginning of the year for a total fleet of 248,000 box-equipped vehicles from approved manufacturers.

A boom in compatible vehicles that is reflected in the consumption figures for this fuel: since the beginning of the year, E85 represents 6.35% of gasoline sales, compared to 4% in 2021. Unleaded 95 E10 (which contains up to 10% ethanol) weighs next to it at 56% of sales, ahead of 98 unleaded with almost 20% and 95 unleaded with 18%.

There are more and more service stations that offer superethanol: there were 3,191 in October, or 516 more in one year. The rate of stations offering it reaches 45% in the Occitania region, 42% in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and 39% in Hauts-de-France. In the other regions, we are at about one in three seasons.

In a period in which fuel prices have reached maximums, the E85 has an unbeatable pump price of 0.90 euros per liter, which makes it interesting to limit its costs despite the overconsumption of approximately 25% it causes. In one year, the French bioethanol industry estimates the economy of a vehicle that would travel 13,000 km at 540 euros and consume 7 liters per 100 km.
