630 euros: this is the average amount of the insurance premium paid by French motorists at the end of 2022, according to a study by the comparator Assurland. An amount that actually hides a strong disparity, depending on the driver’s profile, his level of coverage, his department but also the brand of the vehicle or vehicles he owns, as can be easily seen in our infographic below.
Lower bonuses for Dacia and Mitsubishi
Among the cheapest brands to insure, two names stand out quite clearly. Dacia first -with an average premium of 416 euros- and Mitsubishi -at 412 euros-.
For the Romanian brand of the Renault group, it is clearly its historical bargain price positioning that is reflected in the cost of insurance. Buyers can also more logically opt for these third-party insurance models, and not all-risk, one of Assurland’s recommendations for lowering the amount of the premium by adapting its level of coverage to its use.
Currently at Dacia, the most expensive new vehicle in the range without options sells for 21,300 euros. It is, however, the smallest car, the Spring in Expression finish, but for which we find the extra cost in 100% electric vehicles, mainly due to the battery, and the transportation costs with a “made in China” production of this model.
Chez Mitsubishi, its two vehicles are currently selling new in France, the Eclipse Cross hybrid rechargeable, starting at 41,690 euros, and a small city, the SpaceStar, which starts at 13,890 euros and represents a large majority of 2,300 sales from the beginning of
As a general rule, vehicles from Asian, and particularly Japanese, brands are less expensive to insure, Assurland says.
Tesla’s insurance falls 11% in two years
On the other hand, and as expected, we find high-end brands such as Maserati, Porsche or even BMW at the top of the table, with quite variable price levels depending on the model. The current range of BMW, with the 1 Series, for example, currently starts at 30,200 euros, that of Porsche, with the 718 Cayman, at 59,662, when you have to pay at least 75,450 euros in Maserati to find yourself behind the wheel of the Grecale SUV. .
Another phenomenon found in the Assurland study: cheaper insurance for electric cars, especially since the elimination of TSCA (Special Tax on Insurance Agreements) for these models purchased between 2021 and 2023 and any commercial offer from insurers. Everything depends, of course, on the level of autonomy of the car purchased: Tesla, for example, is among the most expensive brands to insure with an average premium of 915 euros. But this number is down 11% in two years, Assurland points out, with the median price dropping considerably with the Model 3 and Model Y being more affordable than the Model S and Model X.
