This is (usually) a staple of any windshield. However, the green sticker, the car insurance certificate, may be living its last months. Indeed, the Ministries of Economy and Interior are working on the withdrawal of this piece of paper, annual proof that the vehicle is well insured.
“A Clash of Simplification”
“We are working with the Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, to remove that little green label that you have to stick behind your windshield and that shows that you are well insured so that it dematerializes,” confirmed Bruno Le Maire on Tuesday. at a press conference in Bercy with the Insurance Federation on inflation.
It is a blow of simplification for our compatriots and at the same time it is a cost that is reduced, so I hope that in the course of 2023 with Gerald Darmanin we can announce the definitive elimination of this green label”, the minister added.
If successful, this abolition does not mean the end of compulsory car insurance, quite the contrary. “This little green card, the insurance certificate, is no longer useful, because we have a file of insured vehicles (FVA) that is much more effective in the fight against insurance fraud”, underlined Bruno Le Maire Françoise Lustman, president of French Insurers.
A file shared with the police.
This file was created in 2016 and is fed directly by insurers. The file thus specifies the license plate of the vehicle, the name of the insurer, the number of the insurance contract and its validity. This theoretically makes it possible to have all the insurance guarantees linked to each registered vehicle in real time.
“Insurance companies must communicate the information provided within 72 hours after the subscription or termination of the motor vehicle civil liability guarantee”, can be read on the Allianz insurer’s website.
Since 2019, law enforcement can consult this file to verify that a vehicle is properly insured. “Historically, the decal and the green card served as proof of insurance. FVA is 99% reliable, much more so than the green card and sticker system. For example, a motorist who cancels during the year may keep his decal on for several months. your windshield while the file is updated daily,” the president of France Assureurs said in May in argus insurance.
Removing the green label would also have an ecological impact. According toargus insurance50 million insurance certificates are printed each year.
