Small speeding tickets: when will you always lose a point? Take the test with our calculator

As of January 1, 2024, speeding below 5 km/h will no longer be penalized by deducting one point. Thanks to our calculator, you can simulate what you risk based on the current limit.

This was the announcement of the week, made by the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin: as of January 1, 2024, excesses of less than 5 km/h over the speed recorded by the radar will no longer be penalized by the withdrawal of a point, as is currently the case with all excesses of less than 20 km/h.

The fine remains

The fine is maintained, with the economic sanction that is applied to excesses of less than 20 km/h: in urbanized areas, a fixed fine of 135 euros (90 euros less) and out of agglomeration, a fine of 90 euros (68 euros less).

Also note that this is effectively the speed used, i.e. corrected for the margin of error: it is 5 km/h less than the recorded speed for speeds below 100 km/h, and 5% less than that above 100 km/h.

A custom calculator

It’s not easy… To help you orient yourself, we have a calculator. Give it a try to see what you risk based on speed recorded by radar (before margin of error correction).

A measure that still needs to be clarified

For rappel, the measure should apply from the 1st of January 2024. Concretely, jusque là vous perdrez donc toujours un point pour tout excès inferior to 20km/h, even if it is inferior to 5km/h par rapport à la limite in force.

The implementing decrees will also have to specify the framework of this measure: will this end of the withdrawal of points for “small” excesses be applied to professionals, to heavyweights?

The announcement of this decision has provoked many reactions, both from those who approve it and from those who strongly criticize it.
