Electric and low-cost models dominate the ranking of new best-selling models in Europe. In the first quarter, the Tesla Model Y is in the lead, with 71,683 units sold, an increase of 173% in one year, according to data from the firm Jato Dynamics.
models logically in mind
The Tesla SUV benefits from the various price reductions practiced by the American brand in recent times. Currently part of the 44,990 euros in France, and therefore just under 40,000 euros withdrawing the 5,000 euros of ecological bonus. It is the only model that is offered exclusively in a 100% electric version of the top 25 sales in Europe: the Peugeot 208 (4th), Opel Corsa (5th), Fiat 500 (7th) and Peugeot 2008 (11th) are also sold in engines thermal.
The Dacia Sandero is in second place, with 60,202 sales, 27% more. The Volkswagen T-Roc completes the podium (54,960 sales, +50%), a symbol of the still significant success of SUVs, electric like the Model Y, or not… like this model from the German brand, which appeared in 2017.
In 2022, it was the Peugeot 208, which finished in first place in the European ranking, the versatile city car does benefit from thermal and electric versions, which had allowed it to surpass the Volkswagen Golf, after 14 years of uninterrupted reign.
The Dacia Sandero had already finished in second place last year. The saloon benefits from its very aggressive pricing, starting at less than 12,000 euros in France, and a crossover version, the Sandero Stepway (from 15,100 euros) whose sales are cumulative. A bit as if Volkswagen added the sales of its T-Roc and the Golf, which would place the duo at the top of the ranking with a total of 97,863 sales, just ahead of the Peugeot 208/2008 pair, with 95,360 units. .
A more classic ranking of brands
As for brands, we remain in a much more common top three. Volkswagen largely dominates the new market in the European Union with 33,723 sales in the first quarter (+25%), ahead of Toyota, with 220,019 units (+19%) and Peugeot, with 178,572 sales (+9%). Faced with the so-called general brands such as Skoda, sixth, or Renault, eighth, we find the German premium giants.
In fact, Audi ranks fourth, with 178,393 sales, ahead of Mercedes (176,041) and BMW, seventh with 163,639 sales.
Dacia is not far behind Renault, in tenth place, with 145,500 sales, up 42% in a year, the strongest increase in the top 10.
Tesla is only aiming for 16th place, but with a reduced range of 4 models (and sales that are mainly focused on its Model Y and Model 3). The American brand is showing even stronger momentum than Dacia, with sales up 58%.
