Fuel prices: diesel loses another 5 cents and widens the gap with gasoline

Diesel sold on average for 1.67 euros per liter last week in France, compared to 1.84 euros per liter for gasoline.

The average price of diesel at the pump fell again considerably last week. Indeed, the price of the most consumed fuel in France has lost 5.5 cents, to stand at 1.6655 euros per liter, according to the latest figures published this Tuesday by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and stopped on the date of Friday 5 May.

For its part, gasoline (SP95-E10) lost 3.8 cents, with an average price of 1.8401 euros per liter.

Diesel thus recovers its price at the end of September 2022, but then benefited from a government discount of 30 cents (and that of Totalénergies, which added an additional 20 cents). Without this discount, we find the price at the end of January 2022, before the start of the war in Ukraine.

A difference of more than 17 cents

Which further widens the gap between gasoline and diesel, with a price difference that now represents 17.46 cents. You have to go back to June 2016 to find such a difference between the two fuels: except that at that time diesel was sold at 1.14 euros per liter and gasoline at 1.32 euros per liter.

Several factors explain this large price difference. Now, a more favorable taxation for diesel, with 10 cents more tax on gasoline.

Then we can add the international context: after the embargo on Russian diesel, the other suppliers finally offer this fuel at a lower price than expected.

Finally, the start of the “driving season” in the United States tends to strengthen the demand for gasoline, which may explain the lower current drop in this fuel, and therefore a greater difference with diesel.
