Ecologists sent an open letter to Emmanuel Macron this Saturday, July 26, asking him to intervene in an emergency to avoid the destruction provided by the United States of female contraceptives, stored in Belgium and that could be incinerated in France.
These contraception media (implants, IUD), with a value of $ 9.7 million according to the press information, are destined for “low or intermediate income countries within the framework of the American Agency for International Development” (USAID), dismantled by the Trump administration, write in this letter, consulted by the AFP, signed by the Patrons of the Navy Tondelier and several parliamentary women.
Call Emmanuel Macron to “not become an accomplice”
This American decision is “an affront to the fundamental principles of solidarity, public health and sexual and reproductive rights that France has pledged to defend,” they add, urging Emmanuel Macron to “not make an accomplice, even indirectly, of retrograde policies.”
“Missing contraception help is a shame, destroying products already manufactured and financed is even more mental,” Marine Murnier was outraged.
Ecologists request the Head of State “within the framework of a joint initiative with the European Commission” to request the suspension of this destruction. They also want “explicitly” to support humanitarian organizations that said they were “ready to redistribute these contraceptives.”
“Prevent this destruction that will cost lives”
The chef of the Representation of France Insoumise (LFI) Mathilde Panot also urged Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister François Bayrou to “act to prevent this destruction that will cost lives”, in a message published in X. “These resources are vital, especially for the 218 million women who do not have access to contraception care,” he wrote.
The story has been revealed by The Guardian and, according to the press information, these contraceptives are stored in Belgium and must be cremated in France.
The Trump administration recently admitted to having destroyed tons of foods for children with malnutrition because this food was outdated.
These cases are involved at a time when the United States is drastically reviewing its international aid, since Congress suppressed on July 18, about $ 9 billion in help mainly for the foreigner.
The Trump administration also ended the USAID, which was integrated into the State Department, returned thousands of employees, and eliminated a series of programs that promote family planning or abortion.
