A wooden Citroën 2CV, unique in the world, was sold on Sunday for 210,000 euros (including expenses), a record, during an auction in Montbazon, near Tours.
“210,000 euros, record broken!” exclaimed the auctioneer, Aymeric Rouillac, at the end of the auction, broadcast on the Internet. The previous record was set at 172,000 euros, according to the same source.
The car was acquired by Jean-Paul Favand, founder of the Paris Fair Museum of Arts, and “rain of curiosities”.
“My voice is a bit off after this bet,” he replied by phone.
Auctioneers had estimated the car at between €150,000 and €200,000, based on the previous world record for a 2CV.
Walnut, pear, apple and cherry
The body of the 2CV, of the AZKA type and dating from 1955, was made entirely of fruit wood by the French carpenter and carpenter Michel Robillard. “La Belle Lochoise” is made of walnut for the fenders, pear and apple for the body, as well as cherry for the doors and trunk.
Contrary to what was initially announced, the car does not have a gray card and therefore cannot go on the road, Me Rouillac specified before the sale, describing “a unique car in the world” that “rolls perfectly”. His designer, the “Leonardo da Vinci of the 2CV” according to Me Rouillac, notably produced wooden models for Ferrari and began construction of his 2CV in 2011.
“I spent five years of my life there, 5,000 hours of work, passion, day and sometimes night. And the 2CV left my workshop driving in September 2017, ”he recalled to AFP.
The retiree already has “another crazy project in mind”, the “icing on the cake”: the realization of a DS21 Cabriolet Chapron coupe, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the DS.
