Music, series, sports… Digital subscriptions have been consolidated in France, as in other countries. To the point that 70% of French residents have subscribed to access paid content (Disney+, Netflix, Spotify, etc.), according to a survey by the subscription sharing platform Spliiit.
Conducted in July among 1,000 people and published this Tuesday, October 7, it reveals in particular that one in three French people pays for a service that they do not use. That is, they contracted a “ghost subscription.” They represent 15% of paid plans.
And this trend is especially pronounced among young people between 18 and 24 years old, 45% of whom acknowledge having paid for a platform that they use little or nothing due to forgetfulness.
Hundreds of euros lost every month
An oversight that is not unimportant, because these people lose hundreds of euros a year. Almost one in two French people spend more than 25 euros per month on paid plans, while 13% spend more than 50 euros. Some even exceed 100 euros, having subscribed to more than six digital services.
While many respondents say they use most or all of the platforms they pay for, others admit they use less than half of them. A fact that is all the more surprising because some people delay or even do not cancel a subscription, although they end up realizing that they have forgotten it.
For example, one respondent who paid for more than six paid plans and used less than half of them took more than six months to terminate those that were not useful to him. While he spent more than 100 euros. Others who also pay the same amount choose not to cancel their “ghost subscriptions” for one reason: the hope of using them again soon.
He is far from the only one. Of the total number of respondents, 38% maintain a useless formula for the same reason. 27% admit to having forgotten them, while 16% save some for fear of missing out on content. Finally, 8% are simply too lazy to cancel.
On the other hand, 30% of those surveyed quickly stopped paying for a platform they did not use, in less than a month. And more than a quarter waited between one and three months before taking action.
