How do motorized two-wheeler (PTW) users perceive danger on the road? This is what the third edition of the BPCE Assurances 2-wheel barometer* aims to find out.
Increasingly complicated driving in the city
Almost one in two PTW drivers (49%, +3 points compared to 2022) say they have already been involved in at least one traffic accident. By a large majority, 80%, those surveyed say that they feel more exposed to accidents than motorists. This is their number one fear: 76% say a car puts them in danger on a regular basis.
Other newer threats: bikes and scooters. 77% point to an increase in city driving, which complicates their driving.
A journey at 80 km/h that divides
73% of motorcyclists and scooter users feel that they are not sufficiently protected by wheel accessories, nor by the highway code for 63% of them.
As for the change to 80 km/h, totally or partially abandoned by a certain number of departments, two-wheeled drivers are particularly divided: 33% think that it has improved road safety, while, on the contrary, 31 % considers that it has been demoted.
more caution
Faced with the various dangers they face, almost 8 users of motorized two-wheelers out of 10 say they are more cautious than before, and especially in relation to the behavior of motorists.
7 out of 10 declare that they respect the speed limits. While 6 out of 10 say they slow down before a turn, 14% admit to speeding up in the turn to get more feel. Reckless behavior found more among people who are younger or have started riding a motorcycle or scooter less than two years ago.
An increasing source of distraction for motorists in recent years, the phone is also a source of distraction for two-wheelers: almost one in two say they check it occasionally while driving.
A desired maintenance incentive
Lastly, the BPCE barometer is logically interested in the relationship between users and their insurance, in which 62% of those surveyed say they trust.
8 out of 10 drivers of two-wheeled vehicles would like to benefit from awareness courses on road risks, or even incentives for the maintenance of their vehicles in collaborating workshops. One last interesting point, as the government should present its final project for a technical inspection of two-wheelers in France this summer, for effective implementation in early 2024.
*Survey conducted online from April 26 to May 10, 2023 to a sample of 1,013 people, representative of users of motorized two-wheeled vehicles (motorbike or scooter) at least once a month. Survey conducted by Toluna, Harris Interactive and Terre de Sienne for BPCE Assurances. It takes into account the quota and adjustment method applied to the following variables: sex, age, socio-professional category, region of the interviewee and frequency of use of a motorized two-wheeled vehicle.
