The Government wants to lower the legal age to obtain the license to 17 years

The Executive wants to lower the legal age to get a driver’s license from 18 to 17 years. A measure to help young people in particular to find an internship or a job.

The driver’s license soon accessible from the age of 17. This is what the government wants. According to information from France Info confirmed by BFMTV, this measure is being studied and could be announced very soon, perhaps next week, by Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne herself.

work objective

This reflection on the minimum age to obtain a driver’s license has been underway for several weeks within the executive. The final vote at the beginning of the week in the National Assembly of a bill “which aims to facilitate the approval and obtaining of the driver’s license exam” today gives it a legal framework. It foresees a report to study the possibility of lowering the age of permit approval to 16 or 17 years. Of course without going through accompanied driving. The government is obviously moving more towards 17 years.

Lowering the license age to 17 is firstly part of a broader thinking on transport, which is currently being undertaken by the government. Approving the permit earlier should allow youth to move more easily to find an internship or job.
