The biggest record companies are demanding hundreds of millions of dollars in unpaid royalties from Twitter, accusing the social network of not having done enough against the misuse of songs on its platform.
“Twitter is the only major social network that has consistently refused to make deals to use millions of songs,” said David Israelite, executive director of the American Music Publishers Association (NMPA).
too many delays
The editors denounce the slowness of Twitter to eliminate musical content published without authorization, delays that reach “many times weeks”, “sometimes more”, according to a document presented this Wednesday in a federal court in Nashville (Tennessee).
At the same time, the company uses this content to attract Internet users and monetize tweets that include music through advertising, argue the record companies, including Universal, Sony or Warner.
They ask the courts to order Twitter to cease these practices and pay $150,000 for each piece used without authorization.
Having noted thousands of tweets by publishers, the bill could potentially run into several hundred million dollars.
