The value of the IRS refund provided by the Tax Authorities totals 2.5 billion euros, reaching some 2.5 million households, according to data from the State Secretary for Tax Affairs.
“Right now the AT [Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira] have already made repayments to about 2.5 million households and the total amount repaid is about 2.5 billion euros,” Secretary of State Nuno Santos Félix told Lusa.
According to the official, that number corresponds to 153,000 more refunded IRS returns and about 90 million euros more in tax refunds than in the same period last year.
The official provided this data to Lusa at a time when taxpayers are complaining via social networks that they are still not receiving the refund despite the statement being given as ‘good’ for several weeks or staying the same ‘waiting for validation’ for several days or weeks.
According to Nuno Santos Félix, the average repayment period has been about two weeks for those who entered through the automatic route and almost three weeks in other cases.
However, the official indicates that the settlement of IRS returns “depends on each taxpayer’s specific circumstances, on their type of income, on their type of distributions, and often even on the type of misstatements that can be generated and the verification needs”.
At this point the AT has already handled some 4.5 million returns, this is the step where the account is drawn up and the amount of tax that each taxpayer must pay or receive is determined in relation to what they have withheld in the year to which they relate to the income and the deductions and allowances to which you are entitled.
Before settlement, the declaration goes through a number of phases. After submission by the taxpayer, the return is subject to a series of validations that may or may not lead to warnings. Once this step is completed, it is considered ‘certain’, after which several validations take place at the central level and then a settlement is made.
The delivery of the annual IRS return, for income earned in 2022, began April 1 and ends June 30.
