“Tron Ares”: the science fiction film starts very timidly at the US box office

Fourteen years after the second part, the new blockbuster of the “Tron” franchise grossed $33.5 million in 4,000 North American theaters during its first weekend.

After Taylor Swift’s feat last week, the American box office is looking very pale this weekend. The third part of the Tron franchise, called Tron: Aresoccupies first place at the North American box office this Sunday. But with revenues of about $33.5 million, the film started below expectations, which were probably between $45 and $50 million.

This third work, which cost 180 million dollars according to Variety, therefore has worse results than the previous one, Tron: Legacywhich amounted to $44 million in 2010 (excluding inflation). The first part of the futuristic franchise, tronReleased in 1982, it generated about $4.7 million during its first weekend.

In the rest of the ranking, roofer by Derek Cianfrance, with Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst and Ben Mendelsohn, grossed about $8 million in 3,300 North American theaters during its opening weekend, once again below expectations. This romantic comedy with nineties accents has not yet been released in France.

Third, One battle after another by Paul Thomas Anderson, saw its revenue drop 39% in the third week, representing only $6.7 million over the weekend. This western-style road movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio has grossed a total of $55 million in North America since its release, the best score for its director.

Other disappointments include The crushing machine by Benny Safdie, with Dwayne Johnson, which only grossed $1.7 million in its second weekend in addition to the adaptation of the Broadway musical kiss of the spider woman by Bill Condon, with Jennifer Lopez, with only $850,000 in income.
