The French spend an average of 137 euros per month in local shops

If the French spend the largest sums in mini-markets and grocery stores, it is the bakeries and pharmacies that they frequent the most, according to an American Express survey.

Despite inflation, the French retain their attachment to local shops. According to a study by American Express*, almost half of them (47%) say they prefer to go to these stores than to supermarkets. This is 2 points more than last year.

On average, the French spend 137 euros per month in local shops. However, this amount differs depending on the city: 171 euros on average in Paris, 156 euros in Nantes, 150 euros in Bordeaux, 107 euros in Le Havre…

Bakeries are the most active businesses.

Supermarkets and grocery stores are the businesses where the French spend the most money (109 euros on average per month), ahead of restaurants (104 euros), clothing and jewelry stores (83 euros), butchers and delicatessens (69 euros), perfumeries (64 euros) and greengrocers (62 euros).

On the other hand, it is in the bakeries and pastry shops where the French say they go more frequently. A third of them go at least three times a week and 22% every day, for a monthly budget of 28 euros. Then come pharmacies (57% go at least once a month, 20% once a week) and restaurants (40% go at least once a month).

In fact, while half of those surveyed say they go to local businesses to support them, 40% go there to find quality products and 37% to find social ties there. And obviously they are not disappointed, since a large majority of those surveyed (90%) praise the friendliness and welcome provided to customers in local stores and 89% like the offer of products and services that they can find there.

*Survey carried out collecting more than 80,000 opinions from 4,800 French from April 18 to May 9 in the 30 most populous cities of metropolitan France. The representativeness of the samples of the online survey of inhabitants was ensured thanks to the quota method applied to the following variables: sex and age.
