Belgium has opened an investigation after two drone sightings over a military base in the country’s southeast, Defense Minister Theo Francken said Wednesday. Theo Francken indicated in This is the second such sighting in the country in less than a month.
The Belgian Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Lithuania closed Vilnius airport on Sunday
NATO countries have been on alert for several weeks after the sighting of drones and other aerial incursions, in particular over another Belgian military base, the airports of Copenhagen and Munich, and in the Baltic region. Lithuania closed Vilnius airport and its border crossings with Belarus on Sunday after several objects, probably identified as helium-inflated balloons, entered its airspace.
The European Commission proposed four flagship defense projects in mid-October, including an anti-drone system and a plan to strengthen its eastern flank, as part of an initiative aimed at preparing the continent to defend itself by 2030.
