“We are adding a security crisis”: Marseille merchants angry after the night of looting

New scenes of looting and urban violence devastated several cities in France this Friday. In Marseille, the president of the Union of companies of Bouches-du-Rhône, Philippe Korcia, describes an unprecedented “civil and urban war”.

“Marseille has never rebelled like this, what is happening?” said Philippe Korcia, president of the Union of Bouches-du-Rhône companies on the BFMTV set this Saturday, July 1. Sharing his anger and dismay, Philippe Korcia described last night in Marseille as a “civil and urban war”, while assuring that these events “have never been experienced historically in Marseille.” Since the death of the young Nahel, shot dead by police on Tuesday in Nanterre, various riots and looting have taken place in Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg and Marseille.

A request for a curfew at 8 pm

During the night from Friday to Saturday, the city of Marseille was the victim of several looting of shops in the 1ᵉʳ, 3ᵉ and 6ᵉ arrondissements. In total, a hundred merchants were affected and 120 arrests were made. “They are hordes of savages who descended on the city center in small groups of 15 to 20 individuals, in particular to loot the shops,” says Philippe Korcia.

In the process, the latter asked the city of Marseille to establish a curfew from 8:00 p.m., as well as the interruption of public transport services at 6:00 p.m. “I also asked the State to immediately take over what these thugs looted,” he protests.

Stop merchants from fighting back

“In Marseille, we are not calm people but bloodthirsty,” insists Philippe Korcia, who intends to “reassure everyone since this morning.” According to him, a solution must be urgently sought to prevent “businessmen from defending themselves” and the latter has also requested the intervention of armored vehicles from the gendarmerie.

“You have a president of the UPE who is very angry because we are going through all the economic and energy crises with great difficulty and we are adding a security crisis to it,” he concludes.
