The bill for the earthquake that struck western France on June 16 should amount to around 290 million euros, according to an estimate by France Assureurs received by AFP on Tuesday.
The professional union has a total of 21,625 claims, the vast majority of which (95.9%) refer to homes with estimated damage of 260 million euros.
Homes and commercial assets on the first line
This new estimate of the earthquake bill is in the middle of the range published last week by the Caisse centrale de réassurance (CCR), which will assume at least half of the claims and assessed the damage at between 200 and 350 million euros.
After homes, professional properties were the second most affected category (750 claims for 28 million euros), followed by agricultural properties (90 claims for 1.4 million euros) and automobiles (45 claims for 190,000 euros).
With a magnitude of 5.3 to 5.8 according to the National Seismic Surveillance Network (Renass) and the Central Seismological Bureau of France (BCSF), the violent earthquake was recorded on June 16 at 6:38 p.m. in the town from Cram-Chaban, halfway between La Rochelle and Niort.
This is the largest earthquake in this region in fifty years and a seismic shock recorded in Oléron in 1972.
