German online bank N26 targets 5 million customers in France by 2025

The neobank aims to “become the number 1 digital bank by 2025.” It also plans to launch a savings product, expand into consumer credit, and invest in cryptocurrencies.

The German neobank N26, present in France since 2017, intends to increase from 2.5 million to 5 million clients in France by 2025, notably by finally allowing its clients to have a French RIB.

“Our ambition (…) is to become the number 1 digital bank by 2025, it will go through reaching the 5 million customer bar quite quickly,” Jérémie Rosselli, managing director of N26 for France and Benelux, told the press on Wednesday. .

The online bank is introducing a new asset to achieve this: it now offers its customers a French Iban and not a German one as before. The French bank identity declaration (RIB) will allow N26 to respond to certain difficulties encountered by its customers, who sometimes have difficulties setting up their direct debits or receiving certain social assistance, according to the bank.

A savings product launched at the end of the year

Thanks to the French Iban, the neobank believes that more clients will be tempted to use it as their main bank and will direct their salaries there, which will generate “more income”, underlines Jérémie Rosselli on the occasion of the first French branch press conference.

N26 also plans to launch a savings product on the French market at the end of the year, to develop in consumer credit and investment, particularly in cryptocurrencies. However, it is not about venturing into regulated mortgages or savings accounts, such as Livret A.

Its British competitor Revolut, which has a banking license in the European Union, also shared its ambitions at a press conference in Paris in early May. Among its objectives, Revolut wants to “become the first bank” in number of users in the 31 European countries in which it is present, while continuing to consolidate in new markets. The French online banking market is still dominated by Société Générale subsidiary Boursorama, which has around 5 million customers.
