US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in Beijing on Friday that a “decoupling” of the US economy from China to reduce Washington’s dependence on the Asian giant is “virtually impossible.”
“Uncoupling the world’s two largest economies would be destabilizing for the global economy,” he told US business leaders, at a time when some politicians are advocating such a move.
Concerned
In turn, he expressed his concern on Friday after the imposition by Beijing of restrictions on the exports of two essential metals for semiconductors, and of which China is the main producer.
“I am concerned about the new export controls recently announced by China… We are in the process of assessing the impact of these measures,” Janet Yellen told US trade officials on the first day of a visit to Beijing.
