Productions from India and Korea replace Ukrainian metals used in construction

Having struggled with rising metal prices, the construction industry now faces the urgency of diversifying supply markets due to the war in Ukraine. “Many of the sheet metal products came from Ukraine, but since the beginning of the war they have mainly come from India and Korea,” reveals José de Matos, president of the Portuguese Association of Traders in Building Materials (APCMC). Manuel Reis Campos, leader of the Association of Civil Construction and Public Works Industrialists (AICCOPN), also reports the existence of “disruptions related to supplies from Ukraine, forcing economic agents to find alternative supply circuits”. The market has led demand for steel and derivatives to Egypt, India and China, he added.

The lack of metal products is now a concern in the works, due to interruptions in the supply chains and the response times of the producers. As Manuel Reis Campos points out, “there have been occasional problems with the most diverse types of materials, including steel and derivatives, due to constraints in global production and logistics chains”, in addition to “daily price fluctuations, the scarcity of abnormally long products or lead times”. All these problems started in 2020, with the pandemic, and the conflict in Ukraine only worsened the context.
