As temperatures continue to rise across Europe this week, prospects for drought and water stress continue to fuel concerns about an agricultural sector under constant pressure.
Added to this is a Ukrainian geopolitical context that is not without consequences. Marc Fesneau, Minister of Agriculture, shared his concerns this morning on the set of Franceinfo, presaging the non-renewal of the agreement that allows Ukrainian grain exports through the Black Sea in complete safety despite the conflict in Ukraine.
A “rebound effect” that could “drive prices up”
“Food is a geopolitical issue,” said Marc Fesneau, recalling “Mr. Poutine’s responsibility to ensure that people around the world can feed themselves.”
If the consequences for “the countries most dependent on Ukrainian wheat” are more worrying, Marc Fesneau admits that the context could generate a “rebound effect” in France that could “pressure prices up.” He cites in particular the possibility of a non-extension of the Ukrainian grain agreement. This scenario was finally confirmed a few minutes later with the Kremlin’s announcement of its willingness to withdraw from the negotiations.
