The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has “strongly” condemned Moscow’s “cynical” decision to announce on Monday the “de facto” end of the agreement on the export of Ukrainian cereals, crucial for world food.
Signed just a year ago, the agreement on the export of Ukrainian grain expires on Monday. Earlier this month, Russia said it had “no reason” to extend the Ukraine grain dealcomplaining of suffering European sanctions for their own exports.
This “grain corridor” has allowed since August 2022 to export about 33 million tons of grain from Ukrainian ports. On the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius on July 12Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who plays the role of mediator between Ukraine and Russia in this agri-food dossier, had declared that the negotiations “continue”.
The British government also considered Russia’s announcement of the end of the agreement on the export of Ukrainian cereals, considered crucial for world food, “very disappointing” on Monday.
