Summer holidays: due to high temperatures, the French head north

Due to the hot weather, last-minute French vacationers are increasingly heading to the northwestern quarter of the country, reveals a study by the Abritel platform on Monday.

The French are heading north for the holidays. According to an Abritel study published on Monday, “searches for holiday rentals on the Channel, Brittany and Pas-de-Calais coasts increased by 30% on average during the first two weeks of July compared to the same period last month.”

The vacation rental platform also points out that “for certain mountain destinations, such as the Vosges or the Northern Alps, rental searches increased by 20%” in July compared to the previous month.

So much so that rentals in the Finistère and Pas-de-Calais departments are even more in demand than in the Var during the first half of July. The same goes for the Normandy coast, the Somme and the Vosges, departments now more popular than Corse-du-Sud, Haute-Corse or the Costa Brava.

30 to 50% cheaper than in the South

“Of course, many French people will continue to spend their summer holidays in the south of France or in countries like Greece, Spain or Italy,” says Xavier Rousselou, Abritel spokesman.

This trend was already observed before the summer holidays, indicates Abritel. The platform points out that the destinations in the northwest neighborhood are experiencing growing interest from the French, since they are more affordable than those in the south. Vacationers pay 30 to 50% less per night in July and August.
