The debt burden of the economy increased by 1.6 billion in May

The debt burden of the non-financial sector (public services, companies and individuals) increased by 1.6 billion euros in May compared to the previous month to a total of 804.4 billion euros, the Bank of Portugal announced this Monday.

Of the total debt, 440.6 billion euros related to private companies and individuals and 363.9 billion euros to the public sector (government services and public companies).

In May, public debt increased by €1.1 billion. This increase occurred among private individuals (1.7 billion euros), due to the investment of households in savings certificates. There was an increase of 1 billion euros in public services.

Public debt decreased with the external (1.4 billion euros) and the financial sector (0.4 billion euros).

Data from Banco de Portugal also shows that private sector debt increased by €0.5 billion, an amount identical to that recorded in private corporate debt.

In May, the indebtedness of private individuals did not change significantly compared to the previous month.

In the homologous comparison, private corporate debt increased by 0.3%, while that of individuals increased by 1.4%.

According to the Bank of Portugal, debt has continued to grow in both sectors, but at a declining pace, with the annual rate of change from April to May declining by 0.1 and 0.3 percentage point respectively.
