Back-to-school subsidy: an increase considered insufficient in the face of inflation

Therefore, the ARS (back to school allowance) was increased by 5.6%, school supplies increased by 10%.

The back-to-school subsidy (ARS) increased by 5.6% compared to 2022 and will be paid on August 16 to 3 million families and from August 1 in the departments of Mayotte and Reunion.

“It’s a shame it doesn’t line up”

Its amount depends on the age of the child, from 398.09 euros to 434.61 euros this year. But for some parents, despite the revaluation, this aid continues to be insufficient in the face of the strong wave of inflation that also affects school supplies.

An observation shared by Grégoire Ensel, national president of the federation of councils of parents and teachers (FCPE):

“Trend towards free education”, by the FCPE

A revaluation of the ARS by 10%, to precisely follow the inflation that affects the offer, would seem more fair to this representative of the FCPE, who also anticipates “tending to free school”:

He cites some initiatives, such as the group purchase of supplies by universities or high schools:

Again under pressure for the family budget

This new school year is clearly shaping up to be a period of great stress for household budgets. Above all, if we add the rise in energy, electricity or even fuel prices, with pump prices on the rise since the beginning of July.

On school supplies, the Minister of Consumption, Olivia Grégoire, has requested a report by the end of summer to the DGCCRF, the repression of fraud. The objective? Ensure that price increases continue to be justified and that distributors do not take advantage of them to increase their margins in this context of high inflation.
