Italian Council President Giorgia Meloni said on Monday she took “full responsibility” for the Italian government’s decision last week to impose an exceptional tax on the profits of Italian banks. The Italian Economy Ministry clarified that the 40% tax on banks’ profits was a one-time measure and would not represent more than 0.1% of their total assets. The decision to impose this tax was made because banks have registered increases in their billing in recent months due to the increase in interest rates decided by the European Central Bank (ECB) in order to curb ‘inflation’.

The announcement of the tax project had disrupted the banking sector in the stock market, especially in Milan.
